Freshman Application Requirements
WPI Admissions offers a variety of application options. We accept our own WPI application, the Common Application, and the Universal Application. A $60 application fee is required for all applicants. (WPI endorses the fee waiver policy of the College Entrance Examination Board, as well as accepts fee waivers from high school guidance or college counselors.) More information and links to the application are available on the Apply Now section of our Web site
Other application requirements include:
- high school transcript
- science or math teacher's recommendation
- guidance counselor's recommendation
- personal essay
- SAT I or ACT scores or alternative submission if taking the Flex Path Option
- TOEFL or IELTS Exam for international students whose first language is not English
Flex Path
Students who choose WPI's Flex Path may submit alternative materials that they believe will better reflect their potential for academic success at WPI in lieu of standardized test scores. Students who choose the Flex Path are encouraged to submit examples of academic work or extracurricular projects that reflect a high level of organization, motivation, creativity and problem-solving ability.
Some examples include:
- Written descriptions of science projects
- Research papers
- Overview of leadership experiences
- Entrepreneurial activities
- Robotics or other mechanical design concepts
- Eagle Scout projects
- Summer program experiences
- Portfolios
- Inventions
Any other significant work undertaken independently or in school that the applicant believes is an appropriate reflection of his or her academic potential will be an appropriate submission.
Submissions will be evaluated for one or more of the following: creativity, problem solving ability, initiative, motivation, leadership, academic ability, technical skill, team work, and social commitment.
Interviews
While interviews are optional, this is your chance to meet one-on-one with an Admissions staff member or a trained Admissions intern. We'll have the chance to learn more about you, and can answer specific questions you may have regarding the admissions process or WPI in general. Interviews are designed to be informational, however information that is gathered through an interview will be added to a student's application, and it will be considered during the application review process. If you would like an interview, please read the interview details page.
Home-Schooled and Early Applicant Requirements
If you are applying to WPI as a high school junior, please plan to schedule a personal interview with a member of the admissions staff (not a student interviewer) prior to the application deadline. If you are applying as a home-schooled student, interviews are not required, but strongly recommended with a member of the admissions staff (not a student interviewer). Please refer to either the Home-School or Early Applicant sections specifically, to find more details regarding application requirements.
International & Transfer Application Requirements
Requirements for international and transfer applicants will vary. Please refer to either the International or Transfer sections, specifically, to find a more accurate list of the respective application requirements.
If you have questions about these requirements or any application procedure, please call the Office of Admissions at +1-508-831-5286 for assistance.
