About the Programs
Frontiers
Frontiers is an on-campus research and learning experience that challenges you to explore the outer limits of knowledge in science, mathematics, and engineering. Now in its 26th year of operation, it continues to be enthusiastically received by its participants.
Monday through Friday, you will attend classes and do lab work in your chosen area of study. With classmates from all over the country, you will work on projects and assemble your findings. You will learn from outstanding professors and use state-of-the-art experimental, analytical, and computer technology and facilities. WPI students majoring in your area of study will assist you in the lab and in study groups.
The academic program is distinguished from others by its focus on current laboratory techniques and unsolved problems in the following areas: aerospace engineering, biology, chemistry, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, interactive media and game development, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, and robotics. Participants have the opportunity to engage in one of six communication modules: American history through film and the Internet, creative writing, elements of writing, music, speech, and theatre.
A full schedule of activities complements the academic program, including evening workshops, field trips, movies, live performances and tournaments. During scheduled hours you may use our well-equipped fitness center, gymnasium, softball diamond, and tennis courts. Also available for your use is Gordon Library, which supports study and research with its collection of more than 250,000 books, 90,000 audio and videocassettes, films, music recordings, and microforms. You will be given an account on WPI's computer system and you'll have access to PCs and UNIX workstations. A schedule of activities will be provided upon your arrival. We think you'll find this summer enrichment experience challenging, well-balanced, and loads of fun!
Frontiers will be offered in two sessions in 2009. Learn more about Session I and Session II, or continue to the application section to apply to be a part of the program.
Note: housing in WPI residence halls is provided for Frontiers participants. Students participating in both sessions of Frontiers will be able to stay in residence halls for the entire program without needing to change rooms or move out.

For over 25 years, our summer programs have been enthusiastically attended by hundreds of young people. WPI is pleased to offer an academic experience for students entering their freshman or sophomore year in high school.
WPI Launch is a learning and research opportunity for students entering freshman and sophomore years of high school. You'll spend your days working with faculty focusing on current problems and challenges in the fields of biology, chemistry/biochemistry, interactive media and game development, or robotics. At Launch you will attend workshops and perform lab work in your chosen field of study. With faculty, current WPI students, and classmates, you will use state-of-the-art experimental, analytical, and computer technology to complete projects and assemble your findings. Program hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Launch staff and other WPI community members will be available each day at 8 a.m. for early arrival and will provide late-afternoon supervised activities until 5 pm.; lunch will be included everyday. At the start of the program, a one-hour orientation program will welcome participants and parents (Monday, 8 am.) and a closing luncheon ceremony will be held on Friday.
