Foisie Scholars Program

Founded in Worcester, Mass., in 1865, WPI is one of the nation's earliest technological universities. From our founding days, we've taken a unique approach to technological education.

Where science and technology meet real-world problems

We believe that students should understand how to apply knowledge – not just how to cite facts and theories. Our undergraduate and graduate students emerge ready to take on some of the most difficult challenges in science and technology – and, more important, understand how their work can truly impact society and improve our lives.

A national model for education

According to William Wulf, president of the National Academy of Engineering, "The kind of engineering education at WPI is a model of what engineering education should be." We also have received recognition from a number of other institutions and individuals for our high quality and unique approach to education.

Outstanding academics, faculty, and research programs

WPI's 18 academic departments offer more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degrees, including the MS, ME, MBA and PhD. We have world-class faculty who work with our students in a number of cutting-edge research organizations that are discovering innovations in biotechnology, nanotechnology, information security, among others.

If you find our fresh perspective on science and technology education exciting, we hope you'll join us-whether you want to pursue a degree or just upgrade your skills.

Scholarship Program

One of WPI's newest scholarships is the Foisie Scholars Program. Each year up to 10 Foisie Scholars will be selected on a rolling basis from January until April. Each scholar will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship and a one-time $5,000 allowance to be used for a WPI Global Studies experience.

This special new program is made possible through the vision and generosity of Robert and Janet Foisie. Robert  Foisie received a mechanical engineering degree from WPI in 1956 and a master's degree from Cornell University in 1958. Foisie's many accomplishments in the field of engineering demonstrate his commitment to excellence and his passion for problem solving, both of which were fostered by WPI's unique academic program.

All applicants to WPI will be given consideration for the Foisie Scholarship. Students wishing to strengthen their candidacy may submit WPI's Scholarship Supplement Form as well as additional letters of reference. (Available in late September, 2009)

Selection Process

Foisie Scholars will be selected on a rolling basis from January until April.  Academic performance in high school, as well as standardized test scores or Flex Path submissions, will be closely considered in the selection process.  If applicants would like to strengthen their candidacy, they are encouraged to complete the supplemental form as well as attach additional recommendations or other pertinent information they would like the scholarship committee to review.

The scholarship committee will look to identify and enroll a group of highly motivated students as Foisie Scholars, selected on the basis of academic achievement, work ethic, and the potential for outstanding personal and professional growth at WPI and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a separate application or form for the Foisie Scholarship?

There is not a separate application, but we encourage candidates to submit WPI's Scholarship Supplement Form.  All admitted students will be considered for the Foisie Scholarship, as part of the WPI merit scholarship review. However, if applicants would like to strengthen their candidacy, they are encouraged to complete the supplement form as well as attach additional recommendations or information.

What is the deadline for the Foisie Scholarship supplement form?

There is no specific deadline for the supplement form.  We recommend sending it as close as possible to the admissions application deadline for which you are applying.  We will start reviewing admitted students for merit scholarships in December, and make decisions on a bi-weekly basis throughout the admissions application reading season.

When will I be notified if I am selected as a Foisie Scholar?

All WPI merit scholars are selected on a rolling basis throughout the admissions application review season.  Therefore, Foisie and WPI merit scholars will be notified on a rolling basis but as close to an admissions decision as possible (usually within two weeks of receiving a WPI admissions decision letter).

Will I be notified if I am not selected as a Foisie Scholar?

You will only receive notification if you are selected as a Foisie Scholar or receive another WPI merit scholarship.
