WPI Merit Scholarship Overview

WPI offers a variety of institutional scholarships to applicants each year.  The listing below provides some details on each scholarship.  All applicants for admission are automatically considered for scholarships. No additional applications are required with the exception of the FIRST and NCSSSMST scholarships.  

Valedictorians and salutatorians admitted to WPI are guaranteed an academic merit scholarship worth a minimum of $17,000. These scholarships include the Presidential Scholarship, the Marshall/Chavez/Means Scholarship, and scholarships offered through the Chemistry and Biochemistry Scholars Program.  The exact amount of the scholarship will be determined by the criteria noted for each award. 

Presidential Scholarships

WPI offers this competitive academic merit scholarship to first-year applicants based on their academic performance in high school and standardized test scores or Flex Path submission.  These scholarships vary in amounts, but many range between $10,000 and $25,000, and are renewable for four years.  

Marshall/Chavez/Means Scholarship

Established to recognize the academic achievements and leadership skills of African-American, Latino and American Indian students, this merit scholarship program is named in honor of Thurgood Marshall, Cesar Chavez and Russell Means, all of whom made significant contributions to their communities and to American society. These competitive scholarships will be awarded by the Admissions Committee based upon the applicant's academic performance in high school, standardized test scores or Flex Path submission, leadership, extracurricular involvement and community service. These academic merit scholarships vary in amounts, but typically range between $10,000 and $25,000, and are renewable for four years.

Chemistry and Biochemistry Scholars Program

Chemistry and Biochemistry Scholars will be automatically be selected from all applicants who indicate chemistry or biochemistry as their intended area of study on their admissions application. Selection by the Admissions Committee will be based upon the applicant's academic performance in high school, standardized test scores or Flex Path submission. Students selected for this highly competitive program will be given the opportunity to participate in faculty research within these departments beginning in the freshman year. In addition to the scholars program, each CBSP Scholar receives an academic merit scholarship. National Merit, National Hispanic Recognition, National Achievement Scholarships

Students admitted to WPI who attain finalist status in the National Merit Scholarship Program or National Achievement Scholarship Program and who identify WPI as his or her first-choice college are guaranteed an academic merit scholarship worth a minimum of $17,000. Students admitted to WPI who attain finalist status in the National Hispanic Recognition Program will receive an academic merit scholarship worth a minimum of $17,000 from WPI. The WPI academic merit scholarships are renewable for four years.

University Awards

WPI offers this scholarship to first-year applicants based on academic performance in high school, standardized test scores or Flex Path submission, recommendations, leadership, extracurricular involvement, and community service.  These scholarships vary in amounts, but typically range between $5,000 and $20,000, and are renewable for four years.

NCSSSMST Scholarship Program

WPI was pleased to announce a new scholarship program for NCSSSMST students beginning in the spring of 2007. This exciting new scholarship program will award up to 10 scholarships per year, each valued at $40,000 (awarded as $10,000 per year for up to four years).

Current NCSSSMST students, who are graduating in 2009, may apply directly to WPI to be considered for a scholarship until October 31, 2008. Selections will be made, and the winners notified by November 15, 2008.

Selections will be based on academic performance, program of study, recommendations, and personal statement. Submissions of project-based academic work and examples of work from summer programs and other academic experiences will also be considered. Standardized test scores are not required for consideration.

FIRST Participant Scholarships

WPI is a long time supporter of the FIRST program. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit organization, that aspires to transform culture, making science, math, engineering, and technology as cool for kids as sports are today. The following scholarships are awarded to FIRST participants only.

WPI Design Innovation Scholarship

Once again, in 2008, WPI will award a full-tuition, four-year undergraduate scholarship (valued at more than $135,000) to a FIRST Robotics Challenge (FRC) or FIRST Technical Challenge (FTC) team student participant. Each team participating in the 2008 FIRST Robotics/Technical Challenge may nominate one of its student members for the WPI Design Innovation Scholarship. The candidate must be in her/his senior year of high school and be an active FIRST (FRC or FTC) team member. An adult team leader will submit a letter of nomination to accompany their candidate's FIRST scholarship application. Students nominated by their teams must be capable of meeting normal WPI admissions requirements, have demonstrated enthusiasm for engineering and science, and possess the ability and innovation necessary to excel as an engineer or scientist.

In addition to the full-tuition scholarship, WPI will offer three $10,000 scholarships ($2,500 per year for four years of undergraduate study) to applicants to the Design Innovation Scholarship who are not selected for the full-tuition award, but whose applications are deemed by the selection committee to be particularly meritorious.

WPI/Allaire Future Engineering Leadership Scholarship

In recognition of the extraordinary commitment that Paul A. Allaire, WPI Class of 1960, has made to the programs of FIRST and to the young people of America, WPI is again offering a full-tuition, four-year scholarship (valued at more than $130K) for a student to attend WPI in pursuit of a career in engineering, science, or management. This scholarship is intended to be awarded through the normal admissions process at WPI to a student who is a Native American, African American, Hispanic, and/or female and is currently a high school senior participating on a FIRST Robotics Challenge (FRC) or FIRST Technical Challenge (FTC) team. The candidate must meet the admissions requirements of WPI.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

WPI will award up to three $10,000 scholarships to students transferring to WPI from an accredited two-year college. A GPA of 3.5 is required and candidates must have submitted their completed application and all supporting materials by the deadlines listed below. Please note that part-time students and students with previous bachelors' degrees are not eligible.

The scholarship committee will emphasize the rigor of the applicant's curriculum, recommendations, and any demonstrated leadership ability or outstanding extracurricular and/or community involvement.  Deadlines for scholarship application are April 15 for fall admission and November 15 for spring admission.  Contact Michael Smith, Associate Director of Admissions and Transfer Affairs, at admissions@wpi.edu for more information.
