Top Researchers As Well As Top Teachers
Just because our professors are great teachers, doesn't mean they aren't also preeminent scholars and researchers. Since 1996, WPI professors have annually won at least two CAREER awards -- the National Science Foundation's most prestigious research honor for young faculty members. Here, undergraduate students even participate in research with faculty.
- Using sophisticated computer models, Malcolm Ray, Ralph H. White Family Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, conducts research designed to improve guardrail systems on highways, thereby reducing highway fatalities.
- Terri Camesano, assistant professor of chemical engineering, studies bacterial adhesion. Her work may produce biosensors that can detect the presence of biological agents intentionally released into the environment by terrorists.
- Joel Brattin, professor of English, is the president of The Dickens Society, an international organization, and the editor of a new edition of Dickens' last complete novel, Our Mutual Friend.
- Thomas Shannon, professor of religion and social ethics, has written more than 25 books on bioethics and, through the Human Genome Project, received the first grant to examine the relationship between religious issues and genetics.
