Accreditation
Worcester Polytechnic Institute is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., a nongovernmental, nationally recognized organization whose affiliated institutions include elementary schools through collegiate institutions offering post-graduate instruction.
In March 2002, the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education informed WPI that it has received continued accreditation by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges. The accreditation team made special note of WPI's "innovative and effective approach to technological education that integrates theory and practice, and that is ably supported by a highly-qualified, fully-committed faculty." The team also cited WPI as "one of the nation's truly fine technological universities." Read the letter and the full report, both in PDF.
Accreditation of an institution by the New England Association indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality periodically applied through a peer group review process. An accredited school or college is one which has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation. Accreditation by the New England Association is not partial but applies to the institution as a whole. As such, it is not a guarantee of the quality of every course or program offered, or the competence of individual graduates. Rather, it provides reasonable assurance about the quality of opportunities available to students who attend the institution.
In addition, the programs leading to majors in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and its program at WPI are approved by the American Chemical Society for a major in chemistry. Those chemistry majors who complete a program satisfying the guidelines established by the American Chemical Society are certified to that organization as having received an undergraduate professional education in chemistry.
The Computer Science program has been accredited by the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB).
The bachelor's and master's degree programs in business offered by the Department of Management are accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
