Admissions Glossary
- ACT
- Comprehensive subject exam primarily administered on the West Coast and mid West. It is a rival test to the SAT.
- AP
- Stands for Advanced Placement. There are some high schools that offer challenging college level courses in high school called AP. At the end of the course students take an exam scoring 1 5. WPI awards college credit for a 4 or 5.
- College Work Study
- Federal subsidized grant program that allows student aid for working on the campus.
- Early Action
- Admissions policy whereby a student applies to the college early, yet unlike with Early Decision, is not obligated to attend. The application deadline is Nov. 15.
- Early Decision
- Admissions process whereby a student applies to the college where he/she knows they want to attend. They apply in December/November and hear by January. If they are admitted then they must withdraw all other college applications. Early Decision Round 1 deadline is November 15; Round 2 deadline is January 1.
- FAFSA and CSS PROFILE
- Financial Aid forms that evaluate family needs. Forms can be found in high school guidance counseling offices and online.
- IB
- Stands for International Baccalaureate. Accelerated course work with a grading scale 0 7. WPI awards college credit for 6 or 7.
- Inquiry
- Student who shows interest in learning about WPI.
- Merit Aid
- Scholarship awarded based on academics, not financial need.
- SAT
- SAT is a comprehensive verbal and math exam administered by the College Board. The total a student is capable of scoring is 1600, 800 math and 800 verbal. Mostly administered on the East Coast.
- SAT II
- Subject-oriented tests in areas like science, writing, language, history, etc. Administered by the College Board. WPI requires three: a writing, a math, and a science.
